Teatro Greco di Taormina - The Ancient Greek-Roman Theater

The Teatro Greco in Taormina is one of the most famous sights in all of Sicily and certainly the number one sight to see in Taormina.

This impressive facility was built by the Greeks in the year 300 b.c. and in the era of the Romans it was rebuilt and expanded.

In the age of the Greeks, the Teatro Greco in Taormina was one of the liveliest scenes and presently still offers numerous events for its massive amount of visitors.

Naturally, the Greek theater can also be visited when no events are taking place. The theater is open daily, the entire year long, until sunset.

Entrance for adults costs about 6 euros. The Teatro Greco of Taormina is located not far from Corso Umberto and is a must for every Taormina visitor.

Corso Umberto I Taormina

The Corso Umerto in Taormina is the main street, centrally located and where the main part of Taormina's residents public life is played out. Corso Umberto is just under 1 kilometer long and has countless stores, bars and restaurants.

During the winter, Corso Umberto belongs to the residents but during the tourist season of March until November, the street is in the grasp of tourists from all over the world.

Piazza IV Aprile Taormina

Piazza IV Aprile is located almost in the middle of Corso Umberto and is known as the central square of Taormina.

Here one can find an excellent "Bellvedere" (viewpoint) of the coast, the Ionian Sea with the bay of Naxos as well as the superior Mount Etna.

Here on the bustling street, one can almost always find a street artist and can easily spend time alone watching all the people go by.

At the Piazza IV Aprile there is a cafe rich with history where Goethe himself drank his coffee.

City Park of Taormina - Giardini Pubblici - Villa Communale Taormina

Since 1920, the public park offers its visitors a lush, abundant vegetation to observe that is sometimes even very exotic.

The so called Giardino Pubblico can be found about halfway between the ancient theater and Corso Umberto.

About 3 hectares of the best kept, shadow providing gardens offer something special during high summer, allowing one to escape the sun and to get a little rest after a tour of the city.

Here you can also enjoy a fantastic view of the Bay of Giardini Naxos and Mount Etna. The designer of the park was Florence Trevelyan, a member of a small English village.

Within the park are specially built lookouts for bird watching. Some of the rare plants within the park were dedicated to Isola Bella.

Odeon in Taormina

The Odeon of Taormina is located diagonal from the Palazzo Corvaja in Corso Umberto.

The Odeon was discovered on accident in 1892 by construction workers. The Odeon of Taormina is a small amphitheater and is often called "the little" theater because of its similarities in structure to the Teatro Greco.

It is believed that the Odeon was only open to a select section of the public and apart from the performances this is a major theme of discussions.

Porta Messina & Porta Catania

Porta Messina and Porta Catania are Taormina’s two ancient northern (Porta Messina) and southern (Porta Catania) city gates, in the form of archways.
