Castello di Lombardia – the Norman Castle in Enna
Castello di Lombardia is located at the highest point of Enna and has a unique view over a wide part of the province of Enna.
Castello di Lombardia is the landmark of Enna. From the highest point of the castle, at the Torre Pisana, one has a clear view of the "3 Corners of Sicily."
Since the 5th century B.C., the land of the castle was cultivated and used and was altered and converted multiple time until the time of the Normans.
This is the biggest fortress within Sicily and one of the biggest in all of Europe. It was built on the grounds of Arabic fortress ruins and the construction is attributed to Friedrich the II.
The name Castello di Lombardia was given to the castle at a later time point when soldiers from Lombardy took over the castle.
Castello di Lombardia originally had 20 towers, but unfortunately only 6 remain today. The different courtyards of the castle are all completely intact and during the summer continue to be used today for spectacles and various types of amusement.
Rocca di Cerere – The Godly Cliffs at the Castello di Lombardia
The steep cliffs became a place with a cult like status. One can even see remnants of a sacrificial altar.
La Torre di Federico II – The Octagonal Tower of Enna
Written records show the octagonal tower served as Friedrich the Second's summer residence while he was in Sicily.
During the Middle Ages, the tower was partly a defense fortifcation (Castle Vecchio), of which unfortunately only a few remnants remain.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele is the central point of Enna's city center. The Piazza has a vibrant public life. Around the Piazza of Enna is located the monastery and church of San Francesco.
Also located here are Enna's municipality offices as well as shops and bars in the center of the old town.
The Cathedral of Enna
The gorgeously appointed Cathedral of Enna (since 1307) was expanded and renovated in the 15th century after a fire.
The baroque appearance of the cathedral was created later during the 17th century. Enna has a countless amount of beautiful churches, which are best discovered through an extensive walk of the city.
Lago di Pergusa
Lago di Pergusa is one of the only remaining natural lakes in Sicily. The almost perfectly round lake has a circumference of about 5 kilometers and since 1991 has been a wildlife sanctuary because many migratory birds rest here on their way to the south.
The wildlife preserve of Lago di Pergusa is in constant conflict with the race track "Autodromo di Pergusa" since it leads directly around the lake.
Until just a few years ago, the important Formula 2 Race and the Formula 3000 took place here. Ferrari and Michael Schumacher test their Formula 1 race cars on this demanding and first class course.
Nowadays not as many important races take place here because of the discrepancies between motor sports and the preservation nature.
Many of Enna's residents have summer homes on the Lago di Pergusa. Here, amidst nature and the quiet are also located Enna's best tourist sights.
Located in the idyllic area around Lago di Pergusa are a handful of hotels and bed and breakfasts, as well as Agriturismi (farmsteads).
